These Anti-Suffragette Posters Show The “Dangers” Of Women’s Rights (30 Pics)
These days, women going to vote sounds like a completely normal thing. But things were a lot more different a hundred years ago. Back then, laws forbade women to vote and the fight for this right was not only long and hard but also followed by a lot of ridicule from the opposite sex. And it was during that time that the suffragette movement was formed.
Suffragettes were members of women’s organizations, more specifically the British Women’s Social and Political Union (WSPU), who fought for their right to vote in public elections. The movement was founded back in 1903 by British political activist Emmeline Pankhurst and initially, the women didn’t call themselves suffragettes. The term was coined by British newspaper Daily Mail and was used to belittle the women, however, the activists quickly adopted the name and even used it to name their newspaper.
The movement was met with a lot of criticism from men and some artists even started creating anti-suffragette posters showing the “dangers” of women’s rights. Check out these vintage propaganda posters in the gallery below!
