'The Studio in a Box' – HAND Studio Launches HAND 01 at SuperDesign, Milan
Ideas travel and HAND 01, a packable, refillable, paper-topped modular table from emergent British design studio HAND has been launched to ensure inspiration is captured wherever it strikes. Being unveiled at SuperDesign, Milan on Tue 12 April 2016, the table signals the founding intent of the collaborative brand to use innovative design as the catalyst from which others can capture their own creativity.
The most diminutive of the five size variants of HAND 01.1 arrives in an ‘easy carry’ custom-made box with enclosed hand tools, yet the lightweight construction of primarily non-fix birch plywood components featuring slot joints, leaves screws and bolts largely redundant. Purposely simple in its portability and build, HAND 01.1 opens up a world of possibilities by making creativity happen in remote, hostile and impromptu locations.
Based in the North of England, HAND Studio seeks to combine purposeful, human-centred design. Sharing their aims is G . F Smith, contemporary paper innovators and partners in the launch of HAND 01. Each table arrives ready to play its role as a hub for collaboration fully stocked with a selection of papers from their Colorplan range, the pads of ‘tear and archive’ perforated sheets secured in place using a bespoke hand-clamp system.
Available in sizes from 600mm table width, to a boardroom size 2400mm, HAND 01 is equal parts statement furniture for design enthusiasts and versatile, robust centrepiece for busy workshops, creative workspaces and studios of all kinds.
Liam Hopkins, HAND Studio Co-Founder, says: “The logical starting point for expressing an idea and developing it is to sit at a table and sketch, so that you and others can more easily understand, share in and contribute to the process. That principle sits at the heart of HAND 01, to be able to give people a space, perhaps where there isn’t a formal studio setting, to explore their ideas together with paper and a pencil. HAND 01.1 can be quickly assembled on a beach or a hillside and the bigger versions shine as the centrepiece of an architect or illustrator’s studio. They all erode restrictions on where creativity occurs and invite people to take it to extremes.”
Catalogued in numerical order – from HAND 01.1 at the smallest size to HAND 01.5 at the largest – the range of tables have been created with a broad range of users in mind, from the busy visual creatives running from one client meeting to the next with the table easily at hand, to education professionals on field trips with students or artists working in ever-changing settings. With the studio based in the North West of England with commitment to the highest quality materials and standards in making, HAND 01 has been designed and manufactured entirely in the UK.
Established by designer and founder of Lazerian, Liam Hopkins and artist, Daren Newman, HAND Studio has been established to combine purposeful, critically-engaged, human-centred design with popular appeal. Two years in development, the HAND product range will combine the duos internationally-renowned proficiencies in 3D design and visual art to stunning effect. The development of HAND 01 and partnership with G . F Smith has been enabled by collaboration with The Paper Collaborative, led by Paper Passionist, Debbie Wigglesworth.
