This might have been the first time the actors officially met, Elliott admitted first encountering Katharine on the set of Butch Cassidy almost 10 years before. “I didn’t dare try to talk to her then. She was the leading lady. I was a shadow on the wall, a glorified extra in a bar scene,” told the actor in an interview with AARP.

When the actors met, Katharine was already married to her fourth husband. She divorced in 1979 and married Elliott in 1984. In the same year the couple had their daughter, Cleo Rose.

Throughout Elliott’s career, being with Katharine was of the utmost priority. So much, in fact, he almost passed up his breakthrough in the 1985 movie Mask because he was on his honeymoon in Hawaii.

Elliott told his agent that he wasn’t going to leave his vacation early just to try out for the part but Katharine insisted he went. She even called the agent herself to assure him that Sam will be there in time and arranged the screen test.

Katharine believes that projects like these are important to the relationship: “Sometimes that’s easier than real life,” said the actress. “You’re [sic] got a script. You’ve got a part. You’ve got your creative juices flowing together. It’s not about the dirty dishes in the sink or whether you’ve picked something up at the laundry…”

In an interview with AARP, Sam gave an important advice on making relationships last: “We have a common sensibility, but we also work at being together. You work past the s–t; you don’t walk away from it. That’s how relationships last.”
