Photographer Questions Beauty Standards With Photos Of Women With Unshaven Armpits
London-based photographer Ben Hopper creates a photo series called “Natural Beauty” that proposes a healthier take on the beauty standards that women are subjected to every day of their lives. The photographs feature beautiful women with slightly unexpected feature – unshaved underarms.
What’s interesting is that many of these women are actresses and models – in other words, the kind of young, slender, and smooth people that often set beauty standards. However, this serves to highlight the main idea of the photos, rather than contradict it, as it shows that body hair, or the lack thereof, has little to do with the overall beauty of a woman.
“I don’t want to say that I want women to start growing their armpit hair,” Hopper told Huffpost. “I just think that it’s a possibility and people shouldn’t dismiss it. I’d like people to just question [beauty standards], the whole thing.”
“Although armpit hair is a natural state it has become a statement,” he notices. “Why is that?”

Got wisdom to pour?
Their body their choice. Whether I like it or not is irrelevant. I agree that they are all skinny and pretty and it doesn’t show diversity at all.
It’s a trap!
Lume!
This sort of marketing has been going on forever in a free and open capitalist society.
Create a problem for which you are the only one that can provide a solution.
Works for every item imaginable.
Americans are especially susceptible to this sort of marketing.
I am sure there are people in other countries that would be dismayed by our standards of hygiene… Europeans with unshaven arm pits, et al.
….I can dig it………..what’s the prob…….
More power to them. I shave my armpits because the feeling of underarm hair grosses me out. My legs are basically a forrest though.
i love French women…
I’m just glad AFP is here too :)
May I just raise the question… It’s supposed to be a statement about beauty standards, but why exactly is it I only see skinny women with hairy armpits? Big ladys + hair would be a little too much to bare I guess.
The only one that wants to have her cake and eat it too. And probably mine also.
Body hair is a much bigger ‘beauty standard’ than weight. Here’s to hair everywhere – big or small.
Body hair is a bigger issue than weight???? Since when?
‘Issue’? No. That’s a fairly broad-reaching term.
‘beauty Standard’ – entirely. Women of all shapes and sizes hold to the fairly recent approach of shaving body hair – or not.
Not all women are fat or thin but all women have hair.

Maybe? could be a meant to maintain other standards of beauty while breaking just one norm?
