Crocheted Leaf Art By Susanna Bauer
Dried leaves don’t scream “sturdy”, but Susanna Bauer still shapes and binds them in the most wondrous ways. Combiningcrocheting with a medium that you would never suspect, she makes delicate, brown leaves into cubes and tubes and more. The result is astounding. The tensions and stresses in pulling a thread through the leaf seem like they would surely destroy it, but Bauer’s work still holds together.
In her own words, the leaf art represents “the tenderness and tension in human connections, the transient yet enduring beauty of nature that can be found in the smallest detail, vulnerability and resilience that could be transferred to nature as a whole or the stories of individual beings.”
Susanna Bauer was born in Germany and has held many exhibitions over the years. The leaves she works with have not been treated to be more durable: her work is the result of many years of working with the material, as well as exacting work with small hooks and needles. The leaves are, however, well dried in preparation for storage, and some wait for years before being used in artwork.
