How long have you been creating these paper sculptures?

“We have been practicing miniature paper art for the past 7 years. We started a 1000 days series in 2018 called “1000 Feathers Project” where we created one miniature paper artwork of a bird or animal every day for 1000 days to raise awareness about wildlife. We started the series on 1st January 2018 and it ended in September 2020. Since then, we have been creating various art series inspired by nature and sharing information about them.”

What influenced or inspired you to pursue this particular art form?

“Nature is our biggest inspiration, and the need for awareness about our nature keeps us going. We create our pieces in miniature form because the scale makes the viewer more interested in the piece, and the curiosity leads them to read about the species, which eventually makes them aware of the particular species.”

Could you please share some insights into your creative process?

“Each artwork or series starts with deep research through books and documentaries and, if possible, field visits. We sometimes collaborate with wildlife photographers for image references for our projects. After the research, we make the sketch for the artwork, and after that, the artwork is precisely hand-cut in different layers of paper. Then, each tiny piece is meticulously hand-painted with watercolors to the perfect shade of their feather, fur, or skin. After painting, all the tiny pieces are assembled together to create a complete artwork.

We shoot our art pieces in open nature, keeping in mind the natural habitat of the species. We search for microhabitats that resemble their original habitat, so when the artworks are interacting with nature—like a heron hunting fish in water or a stilt flying in the sky—they look more real. This photographic approach gives a magical feel to the final photos. We also use natural materials in our artworks like twigs and branches, which add another layer to the whole art piece and keep it connected to nature.”

The Paper Ark is not just about art—it’s about conservation and storytelling. The artists strive to redefine paper as a medium and use their work to educate people about biodiversity. They believe that art has the power to evoke emotions and inspire action.

“Our artistic collaboration, The Paper Ark, strives to redefine paper as a material and use art as a means of educating people about our planet’s unique biodiversity. We want to bring attention to how fragile everyone is through art and stories. To pique viewers’ curiosity and encourage them to learn more about our wildlife, we took on the challenge of creating miniature, highly detailed birds, animals, and all the beautiful beings found in the world.

Mother Earth is our greatest motivator; we go birdwatching and explore the wilderness around our city frequently. Every time we go out, we return with our minds full of amazing experiences and information, such as aiding Red Wattled Lapwing chicks to cross a road, releasing a turtle back into a river from a field, or witnessing a butterfly emerge from a pupa in the morning. And there is still so much to experience and see in nature that one lifetime will not suffice.

We, therefore, hope to create a world that is more conscious of and knowledgeable about the wildlife they share the planet with by using the simple material paper as our medium and exploring the versatile characteristics of paper to create art inspired by our beloved wild beings.”
