Lockets Hiding Miniature Hand-Painted Universes Inside
New York-based jewelry designer Khara Ledonne has been making lockets enhanced with miniature hand-painted astronomical images, or as she calls them – mini escapes: “You know, the place you want to go instead of where you are.“
Every painting is unique and almost impossible to duplicate. Before she’s done, she also oxidizes the locket to give it that premium aged look.
“Ironically, my work used to be huge. I started painting murals at age 16,” said Khara. “During my mid-twenties, I discovered a few lockets at a metal shop and dabbled inside them, creating simple silhouettes of birds or trees using my enamel sign paint. With a lot of encouragement and a few sales from friends, I opened an Etsy shop in 2007.“
