“Anti-Social”: Mike Campau Ironically Depicts Social Media As Neon Motel Signs
Michigan-based father of 5, Matt Campau is a digital illustrator who has brought to light an interesting perspective on the influences of social media on American culture. His latest viral project, “Anti-Social”, focuses on digital creations of imagined neon hotel signs inspired by popular social media platforms.
The ironic zingers that he has imbued these cleverly worded signs with have made an impact because of their accuracy and relatability. Dealing with the flaws of mainstream social media, Matt Campau uses the logos of Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat, Instagram, LinkedIn and Behance as large and glowing road signs notifying the public of the pointless activities conducted by the relevant platform.

Explaining the reasons for choosing this particular creative output, Campau explained, “Social Media is starting to get some pushback, and rightfully so. Each platform has its own problems, but all have had a large impact on society as a whole, both good and bad. Each image takes place in an empty parking lot which is a symbol of our singularly isolated posts, but placed in a location where it can be easily seen by many.”

Though Campau’s project aims to deride the relationship we have with social media, his views on the subject remain balanced. He reflected, “I don’t think all social media is terrible. In fact, I gain quite a bit of inspiration from fellow artists, I’m exposed to different points of view, I can keep in touch with old friends, make new friends and I can stay current with what is happening around the world. All of which are great things and something that couldn’t have happened 10 years ago.”
Got wisdom to pour?
