New Captivating Layered Glass Sculptures By Ben Young
New Zealand-raised and Australia-based artist Ben Young (whom we wrote about earlier this year) has created a new series of pieces that perfectly capture the tranquility, suspense, and loneliness that can be experienced in the middle of the ocean.
His Entrance, Lonesome Light, Deserted, Fjord, and New Lands pieces each feature one main subject in the middle of the sea, based on and surrounded by cast concrete. Young’s specialty is turning glass into what appears to be a perfectly wavy or still sea, which he does by layering one panel of glass next to the other, turning 2D pieces into a 3D works of art. The artist hand-cuts and handcrafts all of his sculptures without using high-tech equipment.
A collection of Young’s new works will be exhibited at the Sculpture Objects Functional Art + Design (SOFA) Fair in Chicago next month.
