Kristel Bechara Reimagines Stunning Greek Goddesses In ‘Heart Of Chroma’ Series

Published 1 day ago

As a contemporary artist, Kristel Bechara creates vibrant pieces that celebrate life and beauty in its various incarnations. Her latest series, ‘Heart of Chroma: Stories of Empowered Existence’ pays homage to the “feminine spirit” of wise women while focusing on symbols and iconography from Greek mythology.

She began her artistic journey in the UAE and has released many painting collections over the past decade. Her most recent project is a series of reimagined Greek goddesses in bold colours, patterns and textures painted on canvas. Bechara breathes life into her pieces by using vivid colours juxtaposed against monochromatic backdrops in a striking contrast. The “emotional landscape”, as the artist explains, is meant to convey a powerful message about our search within ourselves to harmonise our sensitivities and our strengths.

The strive for balance is evident in a painting of Echo. The artist depicts a melancholic figure whose delicate neck is adorned by a patterned wrap that alludes to a coiled snake. Reminiscent of the mythical nymph who would forever be doomed to suffer with her voice held hostage despite her ethereal nature.

Speaking to DeMilked about her newest artwork, Bechara said, “[The] Heart of Chroma series is part of a larger body of work that reflects my signature style, which I’ve been developing for over a decade. This style blends monochromatic backgrounds with vibrant, intricate patterns that celebrate individuality, identity, and emotion. It has grown organically over time as I continue to explore themes of femininity, power, and spirituality through the lens of different cultures and mythologies.”

Bechara mentioned that the inspiration for her series is the various manifestations of female empowerment. She further explained, “My work is deeply inspired by the human experience and the powerful role women play within it. I’m particularly drawn to portraying women not just as subjects but as storytellers, symbols, and forces of transformation. Heart of Chroma series allows me to combine these ideas with rich patterns, vivid colours, and mythological references that celebrate individuality and empowerment.”

Regarding her creative process, Bechara elaborated, “Each piece begins with a concept or a feeling I want to express. I sketch the figure in silhouette, often in black and white, and then bring it to life with a tapestry of vibrant patterns and colours. The monochromatic backgrounds contrast with the ornate details of the subject, symbolising the duality of life, its darkness and light. I also draw inspiration from history, literature, and different artistic movements, integrating them subtly into each composition.”

Shanilou Perera

Shanilou has always loved reading and learning about the world we live in. While she enjoys fictional books and stories just as much, since childhood she was especially fascinated by encyclopaedias and strangely enough, self-help books. As a kid, she spent most of her time consuming as much knowledge as she could get her hands on and could always be found at the library. Now, she still enjoys finding out about all the amazing things that surround us in our day-to-day lives and is blessed to be able to write about them to share with the whole world as a profession.

Got wisdom to pour?
