Artist Gives Away Free Artworks By Putting Them In Unexpected Places

Published 1 year ago

Artist Kim Press, the creative force behind Sailing Adrift Studios, has taken a unique approach to sharing her handmade art. During her journeys across different states and even foreign lands, she leaves behind her exquisite creations for fortuitous finders. Her only condition? That these pieces find their way into the hands of individuals who will truly cherish them.

In a candid interview with DeMilked, she opened up about her 11-year journey of creating and leaving wheel-thrown pottery in unexpected places. She revealed, “When I first started selling my work, I felt incredibly grateful that people were willing to give me money for something that brought me so much joy. In a way to give back I started leaving my work for others to find. I love the idea that I could make someone’s day better with my art, and that it could end up in the hands of someone who may otherwise not be able to afford it. I love to travel, so my art drops have given me a way to leave a piece of me wherever I go. I have currently left my work now in 37 states and 5 different countries.”

Reflecting on her creative process, the artist said, “Creating for me is a way to get back in tune with myself. Wheel throwing is very meditative. It enables me to be with myself and only myself for that moment. My best form of inspiration comes from traveling and seeing things with fresh eyes in only the ways that travel can provide.”
