British Artist Pippa Dyrlaga Captures Nature’s Beauty Through Intricate Paper Cutouts (10 Pics)
British artist Pippa Dyrlaga has become renowned for her intricate paper cutouts that beautifully depict nature. Using a scalpel, she transforms single sheets of paper into delicate representations of birds, animals, and plants, each piece capturing the complexity of the natural world with stunning detail.
In an interview with DeMilked, Dyrlaga shared insights into her journey and creative process. She began working with paper in 2009, explaining, “I started paper cutting around 2009, when I first discovered it as a medium. I was studying at the time, and I started cutting out silhouettes and progressed from there.” The discovery of this medium was transformative. “It was the first time I felt a true connection to a medium and way of expressing myself,” she said. Studying art at the time allowed her to “experiment and explore it, and also to put my work into context in both its history and how it was being used by contemporary artists.” Since then, paper cutting has been her primary art form.
Describing her creative process, Dyrlaga revealed that each piece begins as a pencil drawing. “Everything starts with a pencil drawing of some form,” she said, adding that her approach is often fluid and evolving. “If I am making my own work, I don’t plan out the entire image first, but will add and fill in details as I work in small sections. I like working this way as it means that the image develops quite organically.” The long hours spent on each piece allow her to “add in and change details as I go,” leading to an end result that often differs from the initial concept. After completing a pencil section, she moves on to cutting and, in some cases, painting. “Once I have a section complete in pencil, I will then start cutting out the details. After the cutting is complete, I will then sometimes paint the cut paper, in part or in full,” she explained.
Her commercial projects follow a similar process, though she prepares “more detailed layouts and sketches” to ensure the final piece aligns with her client’s vision.
