Tired Of Getting Catcalled, This Woman Started A Selfie Project Posing With The Catcallers, And The Results Are Disturbing

Published 7 years ago

There’s a whole bunch of things that are wrong about passers-by making lewd comments to strangers. And in most of these cases, women are on the receiving end of the disgusting remarks. But if you think it rarely happens, if at all, then take a look at this selfie project by 20-year-old Amsterdam-based student Noa Jansma, who captured those catcallers red-handed.

Throughout September, Noa did not ignore the creepy catcalls she hears on the streets, instead, she snapped a selfie with the person doing it and posted it on her Instagram page together with captions spelling the words of her abusers.

And while September is over, the project is not. There is a dedicated Instagram channel for it now, called the @dearcatcallers and there are also legislative changes in motion as well. From January 1st, 2018, catcalling will be punishable by law in Netherlands, and violators will be subject to fines of up to 190 euros ($220). Now hopefully, this will inspire change in more countries as well.
