In the heart of Manhattan, surrounded by towering skyscrapers, street artist Dulk has transformed an ordinary wall into a vibrant underwater paradise, inviting urbanites into the world of marine life. This breathtaking mural blends beauty, surrealism, and a strong environmental message, reminding viewers of the ocean’s hidden wonders and the urgent need to protect them. But how did Dulk become a global muralist with such a profound dedication to wildlife and conservation? In a recent interview, Dulk shared insights into his journey, his inspiration, and the creative process that brings these captivating murals to life.

Dulk shared that his passion for art began in childhood, with early experiences in graffiti leading him to the streets by age 16. “I started painting large-scale murals around 2013, and since then, I haven’t stopped creating murals all around the world,” he explained. Dulk’s journey from small graffiti pieces to large murals has taken him across the globe, and you can find his work in many iconic locations, as he proudly notes on his website.

Dulk’s inspiration to focus on wildlife and conservation stems from his love of public art as a platform for impactful messaging. “Murals are public art that are in the street and it’s for everybody,” he said. “With my artworks, I want to launch a message about wildlife protection and ecosystem conservation.” Dulk’s works spotlight local endangered wildlife, often unfamiliar even to nearby residents. By placing these animals front and center in urban settings, he brings attention to the natural world and hopes to inspire a sense of stewardship in the people who see his work.

Dulk’s creative process is fueled by a deep immersion in the natural habitats of the animals he paints. About eight years ago, he took a transformative step by traveling to the homes of his wildlife subjects, capturing firsthand the environments, behaviors, and beauty of creatures from the African savannah to the rainforests of Costa Rica. “The images on the internet and in books are very good as a reference,” he noted, “but being next to a grizzly bear at 6 o’clock in the morning, hiding behind some bushes with your camera… is something incredible.”

This experience-based approach imbues his work with personal memories, making each mural a tribute to the moments he has witnessed in nature. “At the time of painting, when you’re in the studio sitting in front of the easel, all those memories give the work a very special value,” he reflected. For Dulk, each mural is a way to freeze these moments in time, allowing him to relive them while offering viewers a window into the natural world.

Dulk’s murals, while fantastical in their color and style, carry a blend of reality and fiction that encourages viewers to question humanity’s role in environmental decline. He uses vibrant palettes to draw people in, often disguising underlying themes of ecological loss. “My work is a mixture of reality and fiction owned by beings of nature,” he explained. “Frustrated ideals or dreams turned into colorful nightmares, adorned by the false reality of which the human being is nourished.”

Dulk aims to evoke a reaction not just of awe but of reflection. “Happiness does not make us think; we simply enjoy,” he said. “However, sadness gives us much more to think and makes us stop. In many cases, it makes us try to rectify situations and acts we regret.”
