This Guy Noticed Something Doesn’t Add Up In Banksy’s Shredded Painting, Explains Why It Was FAKE

Published 6 years ago

Banksy recently shocked the art world when one of his artworks called ‘Girl With Balloon’ self-destructed after being sold at an auction. However, one artist was skeptical of this shocking performance and decided to prove how it might have been fake.

Josh Gilbert, a blacksmith and magician from Chicago, started doubting the whole ordeal after seeing the behind the scenes video Banksy uploaded. “I’m a maker, so the way it was presented as being constructed struck a sour note with me. I re-watched it several times, and looked at stills, and it just didn’t make sense as a machine designed to shred a painting,” told the artist in an interview with Bored Panda.

Although not convinced by Banksy’s stunt, Josh says he still appreciates his brilliance: “I still think Banksy is a great artist, and I would definitely not call my theory “facts” at this point. It just seemed like a very fitting conclusion. I think Banksy is ultimately a performance artist and he’s doing a lot to stretch and expand what that means in popular culture.”

The blacksmith also says that if he were the one doing this kind of hoax, he would have done a better job covering it up. “But maybe that’s all part of the performance? He wants to keep us guessing and talking about it, and he’s certainly done that!” wondered Josh.

One day, this guy just kind of figured - "I spend most of my time on the internet anyway, why not turn it into a profession?" - and he did! Now he not only gets to browse the latest cat videos and fresh memes every day but also shares them with people all over the world, making sure they stay up to date with everything that's trending on the web. Some things that always pique his interest are old technologies, literature and all sorts of odd vintage goodness. So if you find something that's too bizarre not to share, make sure to hit him up!

Got wisdom to pour?
