Victoria Rose Richards’ Embroidery Capture The Beauty Of English Gardens From Above
English-born Victoria Rose Richards is a biology graduate who has been working on hand-made embroidery art as a hobby. She says that she got into this particular creative style mainly to keep her spirits up and to alleviate her boredom.
Her inspiration came when she saw some embroidered landscapes online. This propelled her to get out her grandma’s old tin where she found some blue and green thread to make her first attempts at embroidery and she hasn’t stopped since.

As a resident living in the beautiful South West, Devon countryside of the UK, she is exposed to endless fields and meadows, lush forests, winding rivers and moorlands which feature heavily in her embroidery pieces. Her initial attempts featured meandering lines and random organic shapes, but she has since adjusted her process to reflect her newest interest, aerial embroidery.

These spatially harmonious pieces offer striking views from above of classical gardens, farmlands and rice terrace steps. Each meticulously stitched aerial landscape follows a radial approach, starting from the centre and working its way outward. The pieces are embellished with different shapes and paths, made from single lines of thread mimicking gardens, fountains, bridges and other agricultural elements commonly seen outdoors.

Richards mentioned that her focus has always been nature because she loves the shapes they naturally form. She went on, “[They] are made to form by agriculture, seemingly perfectly fitted together yet forced. How many people have fond memories of visiting the countryside as a child? In these idealized scenes I try to express a nostalgia that is both comforting and bittersweet, bringing back rose-tinted memories of simpler days past”.
