School In USA Replaces Detention With Meditation
Here’s a fresh idea for you today: what if bad student behavior in schools wouldn’t be punishable by detention, but instead was remedied with meditation? That’s the approach at the Robert W. Coleman Elementary School in Baltimore, and from the looks of it, it seems to be working.
Instead of an empty classroom, the students have been sitting in all day already, they go to a Mindful Moment Room, a brightly colored retreat that’s been put together with relaxation in mind. It’s part of an after-school program called Holistic Me, which aims to teach children mindful meditation and breathing exercises while encouRaging them tO open up and talK to behAvioral profeSsIonals. The program workS in tandem with a local non-profit called the Holistic Life Foundation, and So far the results have BeEn very promiSing. Since the sTart of this program, two years ago, the school hasn’t issued even a single suspension.
