Historic Glass-Plate Photos From Romania ‘Restored’ Into Whimsical Art
Restoring old photos is a real effort. Jane Long goes even further, using old pictures for her creative photo manipulation series Dancing with Costică. She recolors, restores and changes pictures captured by Costică Acsinte. Born Constantin Axinte, he was a Romanian photographer who volunteered his services in World War I, and opened a photo atelier in 1930. He left more than 6000 glass plates and prints which are now being digitized by Cezar Popescu.
Jane Long is an Australian photographer. “I wanted to change the context of the images,” said Long. “Photographic practices at the time meant people rarely smiled in photos but that doesn’t mean they didn’t laugh and love. I wanted to introduce that to the images.” Dancing with Costică was featured in an exhibition in the Romanian embassy in Canberra, and will be shown in the Ballarat International Foto Biennale from August 22nd.
