Artist Creates Steampunk Costumes From Old Parts He Finds In A Flea Market
Some people just glue some gears on it and call it steampunk. But Alexander Schlesier is a true artist working with real antiques. His work on steampunk clothing and armor is exquisite. All the gizmos, tubes, shutters and whatsits meld convincingly into crazy, high tech (for 19th century) attire. And if it looks somewhat suspect on closer inspection, the overall impression is that it’s a suit for a gentleman-explorer ready to fight dinosaurs, clockwork Prussians, or dirigible duels.
Not the one to sell copper plated chunks of some 1980’s junk, Alexander Schlesier roams flea markets for authentic old stuff. His assembly uses very little glue – it’s all nuts and bolts. And even those are old and used, merging perfectly with the clothing.
Before working with steampunk suits of armor, Schlesier studied industrial design at Burg Giebichenstein University of Art and Design. He is also adept at CAD design, and understands that his objects are non-functional and impractical.
Unless you want to look like the hardest man in Steam-Victorian England, then they make perfect sense!
