1970s Harlem Comes Alive In Vibrant Vintage Photos By Jack Garofalo
Vintage photography is sort of like a time machine. So let’s take a ride to July, 1970 when Jack Garofalo roamed Harlem.Working for Paris Match magazine, he spent half the summer taking pictures of this New York neighborhood. The 70’s weren’t the easiest of decades for Harlem, especially with the exodus of middle class folk in 60’s. Nevertheless, life went on, and Jack was there with the camera to capture it. Fashion trends kept alive, marriages happening with the usual pomp, children playing near flaming barrels… that the image of Harlem, defiantly moving forward.
Born in 1923, Jack Garofalo was an important photographer in Paris Match magazine. Described as watching the life of Paris “as cat watches the sparrows”, he spent six weeks in Harlem taking pictures that were later featured in the October issue of Paris Match magazine.
We can only be grateful for his contributions.

Got wisdom to pour?
It doesn’t look the same at all. Sometimes I miss the less commercialized way NYC looked.
