When we think of cardboard, the first things that come to mind are packaging, boxes, and perhaps something temporary or disposable. However, in the hands of Australian artist Greg Olijnyk, this humble material transforms into intricate, breathtaking works of art. From elaborate architectural structures to steampunk-inspired machines, Olijnyk’s creations are nothing short of mesmerizing.
Olijnyk’s work showcases an extraordinary level of craftsmanship, blending delicate detailing with bold, imaginative concepts. Using only cardboard, glue, and LED lights, he crafts futuristic cityscapes, towering skyscrapers, and intricate mechanical constructs that seem straight out of a sci-fi novel. His precision is remarkable—every tiny cog, window, and staircase is meticulously designed to bring his structures to life.
Growing up in Ballarat in the 1960s, Greg found himself drawn to the futuristic worlds depicted in science fiction books, films, and television shows. He admired the work of artists like Chris Foss, Michael Whelan, Bruce Pennington, and Syd Mead—visionaries who brought imagined futures to life. However, his artistic pursuits initially led him to painting and graphic design at the Ballarat College of Advanced Education. After moving to Melbourne for career opportunities, Greg worked in design studios and later started his own business. Despite his focus on design, his love for construction and sci-fi never faded, eventually leading him to explore sculpture as a creative outlet.
The artist’s discovery of fellow Melbourne artist Daniel Agdag’s cardboard sculptures opened up a new realm of possibilities. Cardboard, an inexpensive and highly versatile material, became his primary medium. Its flexibility allows for intricate folds, bends, and detailed designs without the need for heavy machinery. By keeping his sculptures in their natural cardboard color, Greg emphasizes form and detail. Unlike 3D-printed or machine-cut pieces, his handcrafted creations celebrate imperfections, showcasing the artist’s process in a raw and authentic way.
Despite his years of experience, Greg continues to encounter design challenges. However, he embraces these as opportunities for creative problem-solving. He believes that every decision in the construction process narrows the artistic possibilities until the final form emerges—often as a surprise, even to him.
