Mevlana Lipp Breaks Barrier Between Fiction And Realism With Mystical Blooms Entwined Amongst Ornamental Bars
Mevlana Lipp’s latest creative effort is an attempt to showcase the freedom of nature as a backdrop to metal barriers. This unusual artistic venture was inspired when Cologne-born Lipp was touring the historic islands of Venice, and he noticed elaborately patterned fences weaving their way through the urban landscape.
Expressing his fascination with what he encountered, Lipp recalled, “As I wandered through the city, I noticed the intricate metal bars on many windows. For me, these bars symbolize a barrier between the world I inhabit and the fictional place I long for.”

Symbolically represented by ethereal botanicals in full bloom, entwined with a motif similar to a wrought iron fence, these mystical flowers appear to weave and wind their way through to the open sky. Illustrated in palettes of jewel tones and pale, muted hues these uniquely transcendental depictions are a part of Lipp’s latest body of work, Vista.

Lipp explained that compared to his previous works, he has explored brighter colour palettes in the Vista series citing, “While the dark blue, green, and lilac backgrounds often create a sense of infinite voids, I wanted to explore other imageries as well. Think of an icy cold mist or a red desert stretching endlessly into the distance. I wanted to create works which have a wider array of temperatures.”

Lipp further elaborated that this unique botanical collection is a fusion of paint and sculpture. For each piece, he layers acrylic paint, ink, and sand onto intricately cut wooden panels, which he positions atop velvet. The soft material enhances the mottled, spotted, and patterned textures of the rendered components, creating a sense of depth behind the flowers.

The mystical nature of the plants, the motifs, and the warm animation all speak to Mevalan Lipp’s fascination with expressing freedom. These otherworldly blooms symbolise emotions and basic instincts, according to Lipp, who observed that plants don’t succumb to the same social and cultural pressures as humans in communication. An idea he tries to symbolise in these unique pieces. In a statement, Lipp reflected on the inspiration behind his artistry, saying, “When you walk into the forest, you take a look at all the existing connections, at how things interact with each other without fear,” he says. “Plants don’t run the risk of hurting each other’s feelings.”
