Textile Artist Heidi Ingram Captures Scenic Beauty in Layered Fabric Landscapes
In the world of contemporary textile art, UK-based artist Heidi Ingram stands out with her mesmerizing, hand-stitched landscapes. Self-taught and deeply connected to her surroundings, Heidi uses threads, fabric, and fibers to transform her emotional connection with nature into intricate and vibrant artworks.
Her journey into textile art began with a love for creative activities and the tactile process of working with textiles. “I’ve always enjoyed the immersive, meditative process of hand stitching,” she shares. This passion eventually led her to break away from commercial embroidery designs, which she found creatively stifling, and venture into creating her own original pieces.

Heidi’s first landscape embroidery, crafted in 2014-15, was a tiny stitched vignette inspired by the view from her home at the time. Since then, her technique has evolved into a multi-layered process. Combining paint, collage, appliqué, and hand stitching, Heidi brings Scotland’s breathtaking landscapes to life in a way that feels both intimate and expansive.

Living in the east of Scotland provides her with endless inspiration. “Here, there are stunning views with wide-open skies and a variety of scenery, from moorlands to woodlands, arable fields, and the coast,” she explains. “The colors of nature appear vibrant and strong.” To capture the essence of these landscapes, Heidi takes photographs, which serve as references for her compositions and color palettes.

Her creative process is as textural as the landscapes she depicts. Heidi begins by layering wool fibers and fabric scraps onto painted fabric, securing them with her stitches. “I use my stitches to hold down various wool fibres and fabric scraps onto painted fabric,” she elaborates. “Then I build depth using layers and textures, enjoying the interactions of colour and shape.” To finish, she adds further layers of embroidery in an intuitive and spontaneous approach. “Often, it’s the small textural details that inspire my final layers of stitching, like the overlapping fronds of seaweed on a beach or lichen spreading out across a rock.”

In addition to her fabric-based works, Heidi also experiments with hand stitching on paper, exploring the use of thread as a way to add surface texture. This innovation reflects her continuous exploration of textile art and her dedication to pushing creative boundaries.
