Artist Layers Sheets Of Glass To Create Ocean Waves
Having spent most of his life in the Bay of Plenty in North Island, New Zealand, Ben Young was always inspired by the ocean. The now Sydney-based artist creates beautiful glass sculptures by putting layer upon layer of hand-cut laminated glass together and turning them into flowing sea waves.
At first, Young’s sculptures may seem simple, minimalistic and raw. But then you realize just how much work has been put into these highly detailed works of art, which required many hours of planning and sketching. No high-tech equipment is involved in the creation process, and each of the pieces are “hand-drawn, hand-cut and handcrafted” from the finest glass.
“I love watching the two dimensional shapes evolve into three-dimensional creations and the different way the light plays inside the glass,” writes Young. “I love the liquid qualities the glass brings with it. It enables me to play with lighting and watch the glass react.”
