16-Year-Old Shows How She Would Have Looked From The 1920s To 2010s
16-Year-Old Ohio State University student Annalisa Hartlaub had a question that many of us have probably pondered at one point or another – what might she have looked like if she lived in some other decade of the past century? Hartlaub answered this question for herself in a school assignment for her photography class in which she went through nearly a century of fashion trend changes, comparing mainstream and counterculture fashions of every decade from the 1920s till 2010s in her “Counter // Culture” project.
“I’ve always been fascinated, and a bit infatuated, with counterculture and how it shapes society and mainstream culture as well,” said Hartlaub to HuffPost. “So I decided to mix that interest with my love of fashion, makeup, and photography to create something.”
It’s interesting to observe how, in many cases, a given decade’s mainstream culture was heavily influenced by the counterculture of the decade before it. And why not – aren’t counterculturalists usually the heralds of the next era? It’s also striking to see how rich with fashion variety the last century has been and how short 100 years can seem when they’re portrayed like this.

Got wisdom to pour?
I can identify all the other decades (i.e. the flapper, the punk, the hipster) however I don’t get the “counter culture” look in the ’00s. She looks very normal and mainstream with her flat-ironed hair and the cute floral ruffly top. I wish she would have done “the raver” instead.

16 year old Ohio State University Student?
Not sure about other states, but here in Texas many colleges will let 16 year olds start taking college courses along with their high school classes. I don’t know if I would call those kids college students yet, since they’re still taking mainly high school classes.
Some kids graduate high school early. I had teen peers during college.
I cant get past the 50’s short hair…too fake.
You should really consider the 20’s short hair… looks really great!
40’s 70’s and 00’s… looks like i’m on a 30 year cycle. can’t wait for those 2030’s to come around
