“In The Mountain Shadow”: This Photographer Documented “The Final Days Of A School Turned Rest Home” (10 Photos)
“In the mountain shadow” is a photography project by Steve Davis, a documentary portrait and landscape photographer based in the Pacific Northwest, US. Recently Davis shared the results of a rather unique project he took on. When he was sitting with a friend in a bar, as he wrote in a post, Davis learned about the Rainer School and immediately knew he needed to see the place himself. However, there was no actual school, “the ‘school’ at the Rainier School disappeared years ago. There are no young people,” he wrote in a Bored Panda post.
Today, the Rainier School is a habilitation center for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, with many of its residents being the elderly. As the photographer claimed, “my objective was to document the final days of a school turned rest home.” Steve Davis took photos of the residents at the Rainier School to “represent the end of a major public commitment and the unique culture it created.” Take a look.
