Finnish Origami Artist Juho Könkkölä Folds An Incredibly Detailed Samurai Using Just One Sheet Of Paper
Plenty of us have tried our hand at origami at least once in our lives, with the crane usually being the pinnacle of our creativity. However, 23-year-old Finnish artist Juho Könkkölä is taking origami to the next level. Just recently, the artist surprised everyone by revealing his latest work – an intricately detailed origami Samurai created using only a single sheet of paper.
Juho has over 15 years of experience when it comes to folding origami, and his incredible works speak for themselves. Just take his latest Samurai piece for example – just the whole planning process took the artist a whopping two months, and he test folded the piece 4 times before attempting the final piece. “The final piece took me 1 month to fold, I didn’t count the hours, but I assume it was a lot since I was working on it long days,” said the artist in an interview with DeMilked.

Juho says he folded his first origami models when he was just a little kid. The artist felt intrigued by the possibility of folding all kinds of figures from a piece of paper. “Ever since it has been a hobby for me, although I didn’t see artistic value in it until much later in the life,” said Juho. “3 years ago I decided to design my own figures, because at the time I couldn’t find many interesting models to fold. Last year my models were exhibitioned in one big art exhibition. Then I started to see the artistic value in my work and decided to put my artistic focus on creating more.”

When asked where he learned the more intricate folding techniques, Juho said that he never had a teacher to teach him origami, so had to learn everything on his own. “Later on I began to invent my own techniques to push my art and the complexity even further,” said the artist. “It required me years of practice to get this far.”

Juho says that he has a long list of ideas to choose from when it comes to folding origami and usually picks one from it. “I get my inspiration from folktales, mythologies, history, and nature. The design process for the work is very iterative, I make few revisions to it before I start to fold the final piece,” explained the artist.

“The question still intrigues me, what is possible with just a single square sheet of paper,” concluded the artist. “I’m sure I haven’t faced the end of it, and I can’t wait to see what will be my next ultimate creation.”
