Someone Compared The Sizes Of 30 Countries To USA With A Real Scale Perspective
For an untrained eye, maps can be a little bit confusing, especially when it comes to comparing sizes. Since Earth is spherical, representing it on a flat map leads to a certain level of distortion. And if you compare different types of maps, you can clearly see that some areas differ in scale – that’s because there’s no unified method for projection. However, the most common one we recognize is the Mercator projection, suggested by geographer and cartographer Gerardus Mercator all the way back in 1569.
One map lover, going by the name of Mkyner on Imgur decided to compare the sizes of various countries to the United States of America by creating a series of overlapping maps. Looking at the maps, you’ll realize just how big the USA is – after all, it’s even bigger than Australia!
Check out Mkyner’s maps in the gallery below!
