Gorillaz Copy This Photographer’s Images For Their Latest Video And The Author Is Shocked To Receive No Credit
A photographer named Jairo Melara recently made a surprising discovery when he saw that the style of Gorillaz new music video looked awfully familiar to his pictures, shot back in 2016. So far the video has nearly 43 million views on YouTube. The photographer was never credited for the inspiration.
In the music video we see 2D, a member of the band, strolling down Venice Beach on rollerskates. His outfit bears striking resemblance to the girl in Jairo’s pictures. The photographer says he has been a huge fan of Gorillaz since high school and saw the video as soon as it came out. “I was in shock. I had to go look at the photos I’d taken just to make sure,” said Jairo in an interview with Petapixel.
“I know this sounds dumb/crazy, but the similarities are far too many,” says the photographer. He shot his pictures back in 2016, while Gorillaz released their video in May 2018. “The images were geotagged when posted to social media. I’m sure that’s how they found them,” told Jairo.
The photographer says he does not seek anything from the band: “I just think it’d be cool for people to ask if they can use photographer’s content as inspiration.”
