Skateboarders In 1970’s California Captured By Hugh Holland
A massive drought hit California in the 70’s. It left many dry pools, which were quickly invaded by trespassing skateboarders. Photographer Hugh Holland spent several years taking pictures of these rascals. Tanned, bleach blond hair flowing in the wind, and tube socks proudly on display, these kids were shredding the streets, dried canals and pools everywhere.
Hugh Holland is an American photographer. His collection of skateboarder photos has been released in the book “Locals Only: California Skateboarding 1975-1978.” The name is inspired by one of the photos where a pool side bears the words “Locals Only” and “No Valleys”, indicating skaters’ distaste for people from San Fernando valley.
