Giant Straw Dinosaurs Invade Japanese Fields
If harvest gives you wara (rice straw), you make a wara art festival! For the 2015 festival, the good people of Niigata even made a dinosaur! The Wara Art Festival, also known as Star Art Festival, is held every year near Niigata in the prefecture of the same name, on the 31st of August. This year, the people have build a roaring T-rex, a much more docile triceratops, a massive crab and the fiercest predator of all, a floating, straw rubber duck.
Over the years, the festival artists have built depictions of giant gorillas, temples and whales. The sculptures start from a wood frame, to which tubing and other shape-giving materials are attached. For examples, dinosaur eyes are actually straw hats. I’m now waiting for them to make a full sized replica of a Gundam, because it’s Japan, after all.
